Essaouira is one of the best kitesurfing locations in Africa, driven by the reliable trade wind known locally as the alizé, which blows consistently from spring through to autumn and often into winter. A semi-private lesson with two students to one instructor is a good balance between the personalised attention of a private session and the lower cost of a group class. The lesson runs 2 to 3 hours on the beach south of the medina. For absolute beginners, the first session is entirely on land: kite assembly and safety systems, body-dragging exercises, and learning to control the kite's power window before any board work. Most people do not stand on the board in lesson one; managing the kite safely in the wind is the real first objective. Wetsuits, kites, and safety harnesses are provided. The wind at Essaouira reaches 25 to 35 knots regularly, which is powerful enough to be humbling - progress is genuine but measured. Two people sharing a lesson can help each other by observing mistakes from the beach. Lessons are conducted by IKO-certified instructors. Not recommended for people with shoulder injuries or weak upper body strength. At least 3 to 5 sessions are typically needed to reach independent riding level.
